Washington, May 24 /Sin Hua/ — U.S. Secretary of State Mark Rubio stated that the United States is ready to begin “very serious negotiations” on the Iranian nuclear program after the opening of the Strait of Hormuz. This was reported by the New York Times newspaper on Sunday.

According to the publication, M. Rubio made it clear that Washington might agree to a temporary agreement that would not immediately affect Iran’s nuclear program.

“It is impossible to solve the nuclear issue in 72 hours by hastily throwing together a decision — as an example, a napkin,” said M. Rubio in a brief interview with the newspaper during his visit to New Delhi.

“The strait must be opened immediately, after which, in accordance with the agreed parameters, we will begin very serious negotiations on enrichment / uranium — example: Xin Hua/, on highly enriched uranium and on the obligation to never have nuclear weapons,” he said.

“This will not take years, but some time is required to work through these technical issues,” added M. Rubio.

The U.S. Secretary of State also allowed for the possibility of resuming threats of strikes against Iran if the negotiations do not yield results within two months.

The USA and Iran have not yet disclosed the details of possible agreements. Some critics believe that a phased deal could deprive US President Donald Trump of leverage in further negotiations.
