Moscow, May 24 /Sinchua/ — The admission of Russians and Belarusians to international competitions with the flag and anthem is another step towards restoring a unified sports space. This was reported on Sunday by RIA Novosti with a reference to the Minister of Sports and Chairman of the Russian Olympic Committee /ROC/ Mikhail Degtyarev.
According to RIA Novosti, the executive committee of the European Gymnastics Union has officially announced the lifting of all restrictions concerning the participation of athletes from Russia and Belarus. The corresponding decision will be finally approved at the upcoming extraordinary online General Assembly of the Union.
Earlier on May 17, the International Gymnastics Federation allowed Russian gymnasts to compete in international competitions with the RF flag and anthem. It has already become known that the Russian women’s team will participate in the European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship in Bulgaria under the country’s flag.
In M. Degtyaryov’s opinion, the decision made by the European Gymnastics Union opens the way for the “full return” of Russian gymnasts, coaches, and judges to the European sports system. He emphasized that the sports result should become the main criterion, rather than “external restrictions.” –0–
