Mexico City, May 22 /Xin Hua/ — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Friday spoke in defense of sovereignty and expressed disagreement with the US decision to press criminal charges against former Cuban leader Raul Castro.

“What is the point of accusing someone now for an event that happened 30 years ago?” K. Sheinbaum said at her daily press conference.

The U.S. Department of Justice recently accused R. Castro of involvement in the order to shoot down two planes of the Cuban émigré organization “Brothers to the Rescue” in the United States in 1996.

94-year-old R. Castro at the time of the incident held the post of minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba.

According to the Cuban government, the organization’s aircraft repeatedly violated Cuban airspace and ignored prior warnings, leaving the country with no choice but to exercise its right to self-defense.

K. Sheinbaum noted that the USA has always used the problem of illegal drug trafficking as a pretext for intervening in the affairs of other countries, adding that Mexico does not share this approach.

“We will not fight with them,” she said, adding that Mexico strives for cooperation, giving priority attention to the interests of both peoples and supporting constructive relations between the governments of the two countries. –0–
