Beijing, May 21 /Xinhua/ — China is witnessing a rapid expansion of the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles against the backdrop of continuous efforts by the authorities to promote wider adoption of electric vehicles through the improvement of auxiliary infrastructure, official data released on Thursday showed.
According to data from the State Energy Administration of the PRC, the total number of charging devices/columns across the country reached 21.96 million units as of the end of April 2026, which is 47.4 percent more than the previous year.
Among the above-mentioned devices, there are 4.91 million public utility objects, which is 29.6% more in annual terms, and their total nominal capacity amounted to 237 million kW, according to departmental data.
In October 2025, China announced a three-year action plan to improve the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in the country, aimed at creating by the end of 2027 a nationwide network of 28 million charging devices with a total capacity of more than 300 million kW.
