Representative of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) BernadetÂCastle-Hollingsworth strongly condemned the missile shelling and the attack using drones by Russia, as a result of which at least two civilians died in Dnipro, and several others were injured.
According to the UVKB, as a result of the strike, a warehouse rented by this agency was hit. Significant amounts of humanitarian aid and construction materials were destroyed.
“I express my deepest condolences to the families of the two warehouse workers who died as a result of this monstrous attack, as well as to the families of civilians who died as a result of other attacks across the country in the past 24 hours,” said Kastel-Hollingsworth.
According to her, the warehouse was hit by a ballistic missile, which caused a fire. Firefighters are still working at the scene. Preliminary estimates indicate that about 900 pallets with humanitarian aid from the UN Humanitarian Coordination Body worth more than one million dollars were destroyed.
This assistance could have helped thousands of internally displaced persons and people affected by the war in the Dnipropetrovsk region and neighboring frontline areas.
“Among the destroyed stocks are first necessity items such as blankets, mattresses, hygiene kits, which UVKB and partner NGOs distribute to evacuees and other vulnerable population groups in collective accommodation and transit points, as well as building materials used for providing emergency assistance after attacks and for longer-term repair of homes damaged as a result of military actions,” reported Kastel-Hollingsworth.
UNHCR is currently working with authorities, partners, and other UN agencies, trying to ensure the replenishment of humanitarian aid stocks and to find alternative storage facilities.
The agency representative called it outrageous that humanitarian workers and humanitarian facilities are repeatedly subjected to attacks. The civilian population and humanitarian organization staff are protected under international law, Kastel-Hollingsworth reminded. “These attacks must cease,” he stated.
