UN Secretary-General António Guterres, speaking at his latest press conference in Japan in his current capacity, stated that the Organization is proud of its longstanding partnership with Tokyo and counts on its further strengthening amid growing global instability.
Guterres noted that his current visit is characterized as a “mission of gratitude and determination.” He emphasized Japan’s contribution to humanitarian operations, peacekeeping, and the promotion of the concept of human security. He recalled that about 30 UN system institutions operate in the country, including the UN University in Tokyo.
Role of Japan in international cooperation
“Japan remains a steadfast and principled defender of multilateralism and the idea of international cooperation,” said Guterres, thanking the government and people of the country for their unwavering support.
The Secretary-General listed the areas where Japan’s assistance has become critically important: from delivering food supplies to crisis points to protecting women and children in conflict zones.
He also recalled his visits to Hiroshima and Nagasaki and meetings with Hibakusha (people who survived the nuclear bombings), whose “courage and aspiration for peace continue to inspire.”
Dangerous global trends and the inevitability of reforms
Ahead of the challenges facing the international community, Guterres warned of the increase in the number of conflicts, the worsening climate crisis and inequality, as well as the consequences of instability in the Middle East for world energy and raw material prices. He emphasized the indispensability of restoring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and observing the ceasefire regime.
Security Council Reform
The Secretary-General once again called for reform of the Security Council, stating that its current composition “does not reflect the realities of today’s world.”
“This is a serious problem of legitimacy and effectiveness,” he emphasized, pointing out the absence of permanent members representing Africa and Latin America.
Guterres also noted: it is necessary to carry out a reform of the global financial architecture and increase capital of international development banks so that developing countries can cope with debt burdens.
Concluding his speech, the Secretary-General emphasized that Japan’s and the UN’s goals have coincided for 70 years, and the country’s contribution to the international system has helped strengthen diplomatic influence and ensure its own prosperity.
