Beijing, May 18 /Xin Hua/ — China has sent 10,000 units of aid from the central disaster relief fund to the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region /GZA, South China/ to support local authorities’ efforts in responding to emergencies, as well as to ensure the proper relocation and placement of the population affected by the disaster, the Ministry of Emergency Management /MEM/ of the PRC announced on Monday.
The equipment, including tents, folding beds, summer blankets, towel-blankets, and folding tables and chairs, was allocated jointly by the Office of the State Committee for Disaster Prevention, Minimization and Consequence Management and the State Directorate of Food and Material Reserves of the KN.
The decision to send humanitarian aid was made immediately after an earthquake of magnitude 5.2 with a hypocenter at a depth of 8 km, which occurred in the city of Liuzhou in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region at 0:21 a.m. on Monday, as well as within the framework of emergency response measures to flooding in certain districts of the region. Emergency aid items are intended to support the efforts of local authorities to ensure safe evacuation, resettlement, and accommodation of affected residents, as well as to provide assistance during emergencies and the elimination of their consequences.
As of 11:10 on Monday, the deaths of two people confirmed after being trapped under debris as a result of underground tremors, while a 91-year-old man was rescued and extracted from under the rubble, the local emergency response headquarters for earthquake victims reported.
Heavy rains and floods have struck southern China in recent days. On Monday, the State Flood Control and Disaster Relief Headquarters activated the emergency response system for water disaster level 4 in Hunan Province and GCHI.
