At the Engineering and Construction Institute of the Saint Petersburg Polytechnic University of Peter the Great, a series of classes was completed by experts from the Setl Group holding company together with the institute’s faculty. It was conducted within the discipline “Organization, Planning and Management in Construction.”
The joint educational intensive became a continuation of the collaboration between ISI and Setl Group. During the semester, students studied the key stages of construction project implementation, features of pre-design analysis, development of organizational and technological documentation, scheduling, resource management, and risk assessment.
The final session took place in the format of team work on practical tasks, modeling situations faced by specialists in the construction industry.Students analyzed the economic feasibility of implementing investment and construction projects, assessed the risks when choosing a land plot, compared design solutions based on cost and time criteria, justified the duration of construction, selected topographic maps for complex objects, and also proposed a course of action in disputed situations related to the preparation of executive documentation and hidden work acts.
Fourth-year students specializing in “Industrial and Civil Construction of Unique Buildings and Structures” discussed initial data, distributed roles, prepared arguments, and presented their own solutions to experts. This format allowed students not only to consolidate theoretical knowledge gained in classes but also to apply it to solving practical problems requiring a comprehensive engineering approach.
Special attention in the final session was paid to the ability to make well-founded decisions under conditions of limitations on deadlines, budget, the state of the construction site, customer requirements, technical risks, and regulatory procedures. Based on the presentations of Setl Group experts and ISI lecturers, the proposed solutions were discussed with the teams, strong points of the presented proposals were noted, and recommendations for their refinement were given.
The completion of the course was marked by the awarding of certificates to students who successfully completed the cycle of classes. They became confirmation of the participation of learners in a practice-oriented educational intensive, implemented with the participation of an industrial partner of the institute.
It is especially important for us that students do not just study theoretical material, but also work with real professional tasks, learn to analyze project constraints, argue their decisions, and present them to experts. This format helps to bring the educational process closer to the practice of the construction industry and forms in future engineers an understanding of the logic of making management decisions at various stages of the life cycle of a construction project,” noted Ruslan Yermolenko, project manager for construction at Setl Group.
