The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stated on Thursday that the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) has depended on a single external backup power line for more than seven weeks. The agency continues negotiations with Ukraine and the Russian Federation regarding a temporarily localized cessation of fire, necessary to carry out critically important repair work.

The main power supply line of ZAES – “Dneprovskaya” – was disconnected on March 24. Since then, the station has completely lost external power three times.

Increase in military activity near the AES

The IAEA reports a significant increase in military activity near Ukraine’s three operational nuclear power plants – Khmelnytskyi, Rivne, and South Ukraine – as well as in the area of the Chernobyl zone. Over the past 24 hours, IAEA teams have recorded more than 160 incidents where drones flew in close proximity to nuclear facilities.

“Any military actions near nuclear facilities significantly increase the risk of a nuclear accident,” emphasized IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, once again calling on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and fully implement the Seven Principles of Nuclear Safety and Security.

Access to Enerhodar is restricted

The situation around ZAES remains extremely unstable. Due to security threats on Monday, following the previous unsuccessful attempt, the MAGATE team was again unable to reach the city of Enerhodar for the planned weekly replenishment of supplies.

IAEA staff at the Chernobyl plant, as well as at the Khmelnytskyi and Rivne nuclear power plants, were forced to take shelter from Tuesday to Thursday. The team at the South Ukraine NPP reported sounds indicating combat actions near the facility.
