UN Missionin AfghanistanеExpressed serious concern regarding the detention of journalists de facto by the authorities of the country on unsubstantiated charges.
According to reports from the media and human rights organizations, among those detained are the head of the Paigard news agency in Kabul and two employees of the first 24-hour television channel in Afghanistan, TOLOnews.
The mission is also concerned about reports of attacks on journalists and the confiscation of their property during searches conducted de facto by authorities. The UN called on the de facto authorities to clarify the legal grounds for the detention and prosecution of journalists and to ensure respect for these rights.
The mission emphasized that free, independent, and safe media work is indispensable for ensuring transparency and the well-being of Afghan society, and called on the de facto authorities to respect international human rights obligations by providing journalists the opportunity to work without threats, intimidation, and persecution.
