Moscow, May 13 /Xin Hua/ — By 2035, the share of unmanned trucks in the freight turnover of Russian motor transport will amount to about 19 percent. This was announced on Wednesday by the Russian Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin, commenting on the RF government’s approved concept for the development of the national freight transportation market using highly automated vehicles until 2035.

“The implementation of the concept will make it possible to ensure a phased transition to higher levels of automation. The appearance of a road vehicle capable of moving without a human present in the cabin is expected in just two years. By 2035, the share of unmanned trucks in the cargo turnover of motor transport will amount to about 19 percent,” the transport department’s press service quotes the minister as saying.

Russia already has successful practical experience in operating unmanned cargo vehicles. As noted by the head of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation, autonomous trucks are currently operating on the route from Saint Petersburg to Kazan. The total mileage of such technology has already exceeded 17 million kilometers.

A key advantage of unmanned trucks is considered to be significantly higher productivity compared to traditional means of transport. “It can travel up to 300 thousand kilometers per year, which is twice as much as an ordinary truck. At the same time, the cargo delivery speed increases by more than twice,” said A. Nikitin, emphasizing that by 2035 the Russian fleet of unmanned trucks will grow to 57 thousand units.

The Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation is confident that unmanned cargo transportation is a promising project both in terms of safety and in terms of economic efficiency, and that the adopted concept will become an important step for the further development of this segment.
