Moscow, May 13 /Xin Hua/ – China will continue to play a constructive role in facilitating the de-escalation of the situation around Iran and achieving long-term peace and stability in the Middle East. This was stated in an interview published on Wednesday to the TASS news agency by the Ambassador of China to Russia, Zhang Hanhui.

“China supports the ceasefire regime and the continuation of negotiations. We will act in accordance with the four principles of Chairman Xi Jinping, the joint China-Pakistan peace proposal of five points, and the provisions of the Global Security Initiative, to continue playing a constructive role in facilitating de-escalation and achieving long-term peace and stability in the Middle East,” the ambassador said.

In my opinion as a Chinese diplomat, the situation in Iran is currently at a critical stage: the ceasefire regime demonstrates its fragility, the security situation in the region is worsening, and the humanitarian situation remains severe.”At such a moment, it is necessary for all parties to demonstrate restraint and goodwill, firmly adhere to political settlement as the only correct path, not slow down the pace of negotiations and work to maintain the ceasefire, strive for the earliest restoration of normal shipping in the Hormuz Strait, as well as peace and stability in the Persian Gulf region and in the Middle East overall,” he emphasized.

Zhan Hanxue reminded that the chairman of the CNSC, Ci Jinping, formulated four principles aimed at maintaining and strengthening peace and stability in the Middle East. “These principles represent the Chinese vision of ways out of the current crisis,” the ambassador noted.

Speaking about the joint initiative of China and Pakistan, consisting of five points, Zhang Hanyu clarified that its key provisions include the immediate cessation of hostilities, the prompt start of peace talks, ensuring the security of civilian objects and sea routes, confirmation of the primary role of the UN Charter in resolving the situation. “These proposals gave a significant impetus to the process of ending the fire and hostilities,” he noted.

A Chinese diplomat is convinced that there are no winners in the conflict surrounding Iran. According to him, the start of negotiations between the USA and Iran in Pakistan is a step towards easing tensions. At the moment, real opportunities have opened up for achieving peace, and it is extremely important to create the necessary conditions for the earliest possible end to the armed confrontation, he stated.

Zhang Hanhui emphasized that since the escalation of the situation in the Middle East, China and Russia have maintained close contacts and coordination on issues related to the situation in the region. The foreign ministers of China and Russia have repeatedly discussed the American-Iranian conflict and other issues on the international and regional agenda that represent mutual interests. The ambassador also reminded of the United Nations Security Council vote on April 7 regarding the draft resolution on ensuring the security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.”Due to the extreme imbalance of the document, representatives of China and Russia vetoed it, which allowed preventing an escalation of tensions in the region and created favorable conditions for achieving a temporary ceasefire and launching the negotiation process,” he explained, confirming that the positions of China and Russia in the voting were based on the principle of objectivity and fairness.

A Chinese diplomat believes that the UN Security Council should play a constructive role and promote the development of events towards peaceful resolution. In May, China will assume the responsibilities of the Chair of the UN Security Council.”Within the framework of this chairmanship, we plan to hold high-level open debates on the topic of protecting the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, strengthening the international system with the central role of the UN,” the ambassador said, expressing confidence that as permanent members of the Security Council, China and Russia will continue to strengthen cooperation on this platform, consistently defend the principles of justice, and actively promote the establishment of peace in the region.

Zhan Hanwei assured that China intends to further develop cooperation with Russia and other countries that share common positions on international security issues. “Our priority task remains to facilitate the establishment of peace and the cessation of hostilities in the region. We will consistently unite the efforts of the international community and increase peacekeeping activities in order to maximally enhance the contribution of China and Russia to the earliest achievement of a ceasefire and cessation of hostilities in the Middle East,” concluded the Ambassador of the PRC to the Russian Federation.
