Kampala, May 13 /Sinhua/ — Uganda’s elected president Yoweri Museveni was sworn in on Tuesday for a new five-year term at a ceremony held in the country’s capital, Kampala.
The event was attended by the heads of several African states, former presidents, and dozens of foreign delegations. As part of the ceremony, there were also an air show and a military parade featuring various military equipment.
In his inaugural speech, the 81-year-old president stated that his government will continue to implement programs aimed at improving the welfare of the population, directed at combating poverty.
He also called on African countries to strengthen regional markets, such as the East African Community, the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, and the African Continental Free Trade Area.
Y. Museveni stated that the economy of Africa has remained underdeveloped over the last 70 years due to the export of raw materials, and called on African countries to focus on creating added value instead of exporting unprocessed or semi-processed products.
This is Y. Museveni’s seventh presidential term since the general elections in Uganda in 1996. He won the January general elections with more than 70 percent of the votes. –0–
