Washington, May 12 /Xinhua/ — U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that the ceasefire with Iran that has lasted several weeks remains in effect, but it relies on “artificial life support.” He made it clear that Washington will continue diplomatic negotiations with Tehran, despite the rejection of its last proposal.

“I would say that the ceasefire depends on artificial life support,” said D. Trump to journalists at the White House, calling the current truce “incredibly weak.”

D. Trump once again subjected the latest Iranian response to the White House peace plan to sharp criticism, calling it “absolutely unacceptable.” According to him, any peaceful agreement between Washington and Tehran requires Iran to renounce its nuclear program.

An American leader accused Iran of violating the agreement on the refusal of its enriched uranium and the permission for the United States to export it. He stated that two days ago Iranian authorities agreed to transfer the uranium, but then changed their minds, “because it was not put down on paper.”

“They told me that, first of all, ‘you will get it, but you will have to deliver it,'” said D. Trump about the Iranian uranium, buried under debris after US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in June 2025. “The facility is heavily damaged, and only two countries in the world are capable of retrieving it,” the president added.

Iran publicly refused to give up enriched uranium, insisting that its nuclear program is peaceful in nature.
