Beijing, May 12 /Xin Hua/ — In January-March 2026, the border city of Alashankou in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region /Northwest China/ received more than 380 thousand tourists, which is 7.43 percent more than the same period last year, and the volume of tourist consumption reached 162 million yuan /about 23.7 million USD/, it is said in a message posted on the official website of the Alashankou city government.

“Sustainable growth in the number of tourists in the first quarter became possible thanks to a number of factors, including the mutual visa-free arrangements between China and Kazakhstan, the geographical advantages of this city, and the measures taken by the local authorities to support tour operators,” noted the company for investment and development of cultural tourism “Fendusin” of the city of Alashankou.

Focusing on the main resource, namely the tourist area of the State Gate on the Chinese-Kazakh border, neighborhoods with a borderland atmosphere, the aforementioned company optimized tourist routes and modernized auxiliary facilities, as well as developed cross-border and educational-acquaintance tours based on a thorough study of the characteristic borderland and trade culture for the city.

“We plan to organize events such as a cross-border cultural festival and special cross-border tours in order to provide tourists with greater enjoyment of their travels,” the aforementioned company reported.

Being a key hub of the new Eurasian continental bridge, the city of Alashankou continues to implement the model of integrated development “border advance + cultural tourism,” contributing to the high-quality development of the tourism industry.

In order to address the shortcomings in the field of infrastructure construction, the local authorities built and reconstructed 14 tourist toilets, modernized tourist service centers and trails in scenic areas. They also developed a number of premium routes, such as the excursion in the “State Gate” tourist zone, cross-border introductory tours, therapeutic and wellness tours to the city of Alashankou, aimed at satisfying the diverse needs of tourists.

At the same time, the local customs optimized the customs clearance process, and the Department of Culture and Tourism organized volunteers to provide multilingual services so that Chinese and foreign tourists could travel and have fun in the city more conveniently.

As reported by the Department of Culture, Sports, Radio, Television, and Tourism of the city of Alashankou, future efforts in this city will be aimed at creating local tourist brands, improving services in picturesque areas, constructing a cross-border tourist corridor, identifying the potential of cultural and tourist consumption, and facilitating the effective joint implementation of the “Belt and Road” initiative.
