Gao Shan’s path to studying the Chinese language began in his youth. “In Egypt, I often encountered Chinese tourists and businessmen, listened to their speech, and observed how they write hieroglyphs. Even then, I felt that this ancient Eastern country deserved to be studied.” Driven by curiosity, Gao Shan enrolled in the Chinese language faculty at Cairo University.
In 2012, Gao Shan came to study in China. “For me, learning Chinese is a path from curiosity to deep participation in the dialogue of civilizations. The mission of the young Sinologist is not only to understand China but also to tell the world about the real, multifaceted, and comprehensive China, contributing to a more subtle and sincere dialogue between civilizations.”
In my opinion, Gao Shan, Chinese culture possesses a unique value in the global dialogue of civilizations. The concepts “Being in harmony while having different views” and “All under Heaven – a universal heritage” remind us that the world can strive for cooperation and coexistence, acknowledging differences.
Gao Shan believes that Chinese culture contains a vast layer of knowledge about state governance, social ethics, family relationships, and collective life. “They bring wisdom for solving many common problems facing humanity today. The Chinese language opens a window for people to perceive modern China and to study Chinese civilization.”
