Bangkok, May 11 /Xinhua/ — Former Prime Minister of Thailand Thaksin Shinawatra was conditionally released early from Bangkok’s “Klong Prem” prison on Monday.
Taxi Chinavat appeared in public at around 07:40 local time, meeting with members of his family in front of the prison building where he served two-thirds of his sentence, which is a standard criterion for parole.
The ex-prime minister and his relatives paid tribute to the Thai flag, expressed gratitude to supporters, and then left in a car around 07:55 local time.
When Thaksin Shinawatra arrived to undergo the scheduled procedure at the Probation Office in Bangkok, a crowd of supporters in red shirts, gathered near the prison complex under reinforced police supervision, welcomed the politician.
According to the Department of Corrections, Taksin Chinavat was one of more than 850 prisoners who were granted early release following a meeting of the relevant committee last month. It is noted that he has been a politician for over 70 years, and he had less than a year left to serve in prison.
Thaksin Shinawatra, who is now 76 years old, served twice as Prime Minister of Thailand following election victories in 2001 and 2005. A military coup in 2006 interrupted his second presidential term, and in 2008 the politician went into voluntary exile. –0–
