New York, May 11 /Xinhua/ — One of 17 Americans who boarded the MV Hondius cruise liner, where an outbreak of the novel coronavirus occurred, tested positive for infection, while another showed mild symptoms. This was reported by the US Department of Health and Human Services on Sunday.

All 17 American passengers of the cruise liner MV Hondius are currently heading to the United States on board an airplane, with two of them placed in a special isolation compartment of the plane as a precaution, according to a post by the agency on the social network X.

It is reported that initially passengers will be delivered to the Regional Center for Specialized Treatment of Pathogenic Microorganisms /RESPTC/ at the medical center of the University of Nebraska, and then a passenger with mild symptoms will be delivered to another RESPTC department at the final destination.

“Upon arrival at each institution, every person will undergo a clinical examination and receive appropriate assistance and support depending on their condition,” the ministry’s statement says.

As of Saturday, eight confirmed or suspected cases of illness and three cases of death have been registered.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the incubation period for the hantavirus from the onset of the first symptoms ranges from one to eight weeks. The disease is usually transmitted by rodents, but in rare cases can be transmitted from person to person and leads to a fatal outcome in more than one-third of those infected.
