London, May 10 /Xin Hua/ — An unknown projectile hit a cargo ship near the coast of Qatar in the Persian Gulf, causing a small fire which was extinguished. This was reported on Sunday by the Coordination Center for Maritime Trade Transportation under the UK Ministry of Defence /UKMTO/.

The incident occurred approximately 23 nautical miles / 42.6 km / northeast of Doha in the Persian Gulf. According to UKMTO data, there have been no reports of casualties or environmental damage.

The incident occurred against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the Persian Gulf. Several attacks on ships have been recorded in the region over the past week.

On Friday, the USA struck two Iranian oil tankers, accusing them of attempting to break through the American blockade.

In response, the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned on Saturday that any “aggression” against Iranian oil tankers and commercial vessels would provoke a massive attack on a US military center in the region and “enemy” ships.
