Manila, May 8 /Sinyua/ — On Friday, in the province of Cebu in the Philippines, the 48th summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) started, with energy, food security, and the security of ASEAN citizens worldwide becoming the main priorities.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the chairman of ASEAN in 2026, said that the summit is taking place at a difficult time, adding that the increasingly unstable situation in the Middle East affects ASEAN countries, and deep uncertainty threatens the way of life, means of existence, and the people themselves.
The summit and related meetings scheduled for Thursday and Friday are taking place against the backdrop of rising energy costs and price increases across all ASEAN member states, widespread disruptions in the operations of various sectors, and growing security risks for the citizens of ASEAN countries in the Middle East.
Leaders of ASEAN member states also discuss topics such as supporting the full integration of East Timor into the regional bloc and recent events in Myanmar. –0–
