Beijing, May 7 /Xinhua/ — A series of new historical maximums have been recorded in China’s railway sector in terms of both passenger and freight transportation during the eight-day special operational period of railway transport in the country associated with the May Day holiday, which started on April 29 and ended on May 6, the state corporation China Railway (CR) reported.

According to statistics, over these eight days the total passenger traffic on China’s railways reached 159 million person-trips, increasing by 5.2% compared to the same period last year.

On May 1, more than 24.84 million passengers used railway services across the country, setting a new daily record.

Meanwhile, during the reporting period, a total of 93.5 million tons of cargo were transported on the country’s railways, which is 4.5% more on an annual basis. On May 2, 202,400 wagons were loaded, setting a new historical daily maximum.

The country’s railway departments have increased transportation capacities to meet the high demand for trips related to tourism, visiting relatives, and leisure, averaging 13,525 passenger trains dispatched per day, which is 5.7% more than the previous year. In particular, on May 5, the number of trains running reached a record level – 14,576 railway compositions.

According to the railway, a movement of 81 thematic tourist trains between popular tourist sites and attractions was also organized, while at the same time the cross-border railway passenger flow also increased significantly.

During the specified period, the volume of passenger traffic on the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Xianggang high-speed railway increased by 6.3 percent annually to 899 thousand passenger trips, while the volume of cross-border passenger traffic on the China-Laos railway rose by 20.9 percent to 9 thousand passenger trips.
