Tokyo, May 3 /Xinhua/ — Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Sunday, when the country was celebrating Constitution Day, confirmed her intention to revise the country’s basic law. This was reported by the Kyodo News Agency.
In a video address to the gathering of supporters of the Constitution revision, the head of government emphasized that the post-war basic law, which serves as the foundation of the state, “must be periodically updated in accordance with the demands of the time.”
Sanae Takaichi stated that the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), led by her, will “promote discussions in parliament (Japan) aimed at making decisions, while ensuring cooperation from other parties.”
The Constitution of Japan, which came into force in 1947, is often called pacifist because its ninth article proclaims the renunciation of war as a sovereign right of the nation and prohibits the country from possessing a “military potential.”
Sanae Takaiti insists on making the first changes in the history of this document. As Kiyodo Tsusin reports, the amendments may affect Article 9, which many consider the cornerstone of Japan’s post-war pacifist stance.
On April 12, at the LDP congress, the Prime Minister stated that the “time has come” to reform the Constitution. “We would hold a congress next year, keeping in mind a proposal for a constitutional amendment,” he said. Such words caused deep concern and large-scale protests in Japan.
