Aden / Yemen, May 2 / Xinhua / — The Yemeni coast guard reported on Saturday that unknown armed persons boarded an oil tanker off the coast of Shabwa province and took control of it, after which the vessel was directed towards the coast of Somalia.

The government coastal unit confirmed in a brief statement that on the same day they received a report about the seizure of the tanker “M/T EUREKA” in the waters off the southern coast of Yemen.

According to the statement, the attackers boarded the vessel, took control of it, and changed course towards the Aden Gulf.

Having received information about the incident, the coast guard began to implement response measures, dispatching two patrol boats from the city of Aden and several small vessels from the Shabwa province to conduct a search and tanker detection operation.

A new incident occurred against the background of increasing tension in the field of maritime security in the waters south of Yemen, which is regularly reported by the Maritime Trade Coordination Center of the British Royal Navy.
