Washington, May 2 /Xin Hua/ — The majority of US citizens believe that the American military operation against Iran was a mistake. This is evidenced by the results of the latest poll published on Friday by the Washington Post, ABC, and News-Ipsos.

According to a survey, 61% of U.S. citizens believe that the use of military force against Iran was a mistake, and less than 20% consider the country’s actions in Iran to be successful.

About 40 percent of respondents called the operation against the Islamic Republic unsuccessful, while 40 percent believe that “it is still too early to draw conclusions.”

The war in Iran is “just as unpopular among Americans as the war in Iraq in 2006 /peak of violence/ and the war in Vietnam in the early 1970s,” writes the Washington Post.

The survey also showed that support for the war among Republicans remains high — 79 percent believe it was the right decision.

Moreover, most Americans believe that US military actions against Iran are associated with potential risks. In particular, 61% of respondents believe that this will increase the risk of terrorist attacks against US civilians. 60% think that this will increase the likelihood of the US economy entering a recession, and 56% said that US actions increase the risk of worsening relations between the US and its allies.
