Beijing, April 30 /Xinhua/ — The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the PRC Wang Yi said on Thursday that the Taiwan issue concerns the core interests of China and represents the point of greatest risk in Sino-American relations.

Van I, who is also a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, made a corresponding statement during a telephone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Mark Rubio.

According to the Chinese diplomat, the American side must fulfill its obligations and make the right choice, opening a new space for Sino-American cooperation and contributing to the promotion of peace throughout the world.

As Van I stated, diplomacy of heads of state consistently serves as an “anchor” for Sino-American relations. Noting that under the strategic leadership of CPC Chairman Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump, Sino-American relations generally maintain stability, the head of Chinese MFA emphasized that this meets the fundamental interests of the peoples of the two countries and the common aspirations of the international community.

It indicated that the parties should jointly achieve the hard-earned stability, properly prepare the agenda of important contacts at a high level, expand areas of cooperation, control disagreements, and strive to build Chinese-American relations of a strategic, constructive, and stable nature, following the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and mutually beneficial cooperation.

M. Rubio, for his part, stated that American-Chinese relations are the most important bilateral relations in the world, and diplomacy between the heads of state constitutes its core.

The US Secretary noted that the parties must maintain communication and coordination, respect each other, properly resolve disagreements, accumulate results for bilateral interaction at a high level, and strive for the strategic stability of American-Chinese relations.

The parties also exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East and on other issues.
