Moscow, April 30 /Xinhua/ — Joint film projects of Russia and China strengthen ties between the countries and contribute to the development of cultural dialogue. This opinion was expressed in an interview with Xinhua by the general director of the media holding “National Media Group” /NMG/ Svetlana Balanova.
“Joint cinema of Russia and China is an effective tool for developing cultural dialogue and strengthening ties between the countries. I am confident that we are awaiting quite a few new bright joint projects in the most diverse genres,” said S. Balanova.
According to her, the film “Red Silk”, shown on Russian and Chinese screens in 2025, became an important step in implementing a system approach that helps to mutually promote the best national films and jointly create cinema that demonstrates the shared values of the two peoples. “This is a story that unites tradition and modernity,” emphasized the general director of NMH. As a result, in 2025 “Red Silk” became the most successful Russian film in the foreign box office.
The premiere of the painting in China was timed to coincide with the state visit of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin to the PRC and took place in the year of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the War of Resistance of the Chinese People against Japanese Aggressors and Victory of the Soviet Union in the Great Patriotic War.
According to S. Balanova, Russian viewers were attracted to “Red Silk” by the dynamic plot and acting, while the Chinese came to see “the power of the soul in harsh Siberian conditions.” “I think the film’s success was influenced by the fact that it raised topics relevant to Russian-Chinese historical relations, and it also included scenes shot in the most beautiful places of Russia and China, which was interesting for residents of both countries,” she explained.
Speaking about the continuation of bilateral cooperation, S. Balanova reported that currently the film “Black Silk” is being created — a new international collaboration of Russian and Chinese filmmakers, which has already received the status of joint production in China. The new project will be a continuation of the story told in “Red Silk.”
“The implementation of joint Russian-Chinese film projects is a driver for the development and introduction of the latest technologies in film production and the exchange of experience between two great national film schools, which are rightly considered to be Chinese and Russian,” emphasized the general director of NMG.
“Black Silk” will become the first joint film production, with filming to take place simultaneously at two studios — the Chinese Hengdian and the Russian “Moskino.” The film will feature an international cast from Russia, China, Japan, and Serbia.
As S. Balanova assured, the creator has preserved all the best that made the viewers so fond of “Red Silk”, particularly the original genre foundation. At the same time, the scale of the story, visual solutions, and production possibilities will be expanded. “Black Silk” is an independent story with new mysteries and new heroes. It will be understandable and interesting both to fans of the first part and to those just getting acquainted with this story, both in Russia and abroad,” indicated the general director of the Russian media holding.
“After the success of the first part, we, of course, expect at least no worse results than the sequel, but we hope to surpass the previous results… I am confident that the film, which will be released already in 2027, will have a worthy theatrical fate and new fans in very different countries of the world, but primarily in Russia and China,” added S. Balanov.
