Irkutsk /Russia/, April 30 /Xin Hua/ — At Irkutsk State University (ISU) an increase in the number of academic exchanges and strengthening of scientific cooperation between Russia and China is expected during the Cross Years of Education, announced by the leaders of both countries. This was told on Wednesday in an interview to correspondent Xin Hua by the Vice-Rector for Scientific Work and International Activities of ISU Denis Aksenov-Gribanov.

“It is clear that there will be an enhancement of communication between Russia and China. We expect an increase in the number of academic exchanges, strengthening of scientific cooperation between the Russian Federation and the PRC, and, accordingly, our countries’ efforts will be aimed at solving common technological problems,” shared D. Aksenov-Gribanov with his expectations for the upcoming Years of Education.

According to him, Chinese universities are key partners of IGU. Currently, about 650 Chinese students are studying at the university. They are enrolled in fields such as economics, linguistics, philology, as well as at the preparatory faculty.

“We have more than 60 Chinese partner universities, and every year about 90 students come to us within the framework of the academic mobility program — for a semester, for a year,” explained the Vice-Rector for International Activities of ISU.

He highly praised the work of the Confucius Institute, which has already been operating for 20 years on the IGU campus. “The colleagues are engaged in a very necessary and useful activity. We have a very broad contingent. In addition to students, there are also children’s groups and groups of adults. The interest in the Chinese language is strengthening and developing. The Confucius Institute is a place where very interested people come, coming from their own interest, their own desire. We have high motivation,” emphasized D. Aksenov-Gribanov.

Chinese graduates of ISU either continue their studies in master’s programs or return home, to their homeland. One of the advantages is their good knowledge of the Russian language. “Many of our Chinese graduates are now working in branches of Chinese companies in the countries where Russian is used — in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Armenia, and others. Many of our graduates work in joint Russian-Chinese companies. Several of our graduates, whom we are very proud of, have become teachers. They teach Russian,” the vice-rector of ISU noted with satisfaction.
