As reported by the Singaporean newspaper Lianhe Zaobao on April 19, the construction of the Pinlu channel in the Guangxi-Zhuang Autonomous Region is planned to be completed by September this year. This “project of the century” will significantly accelerate logistics in western China.

Correspondents who visited the construction site report that the construction of the key canal facility — the Madoa lock complex, located in the middle part of the canal — is almost complete. This complex allows vessels with a displacement of up to 5,000 tons to pass into the Bay of Beibu.

The channel connects the internal water system of the Guangxi-Zhuang Autonomous Region with the sea and becomes a key link in the new land-sea corridor in western China. The operational center of this corridor is the city of Chongqing. This corridor allows the transportation of goods by railway from the western provinces to the Guangxi-Zhuang Autonomous Region, and then enters the international market through the Beibu Gulf.As noted by one of the logistics operators of the Guangxi-Zhuang Autonomous Region, the route from Chongqing to the Vietnamese port via Shanghai on the Yangtze River previously took more than 20 days, but now, with combined rail-sea transportation, it takes only 4 days.

In the port of Qinzhou, located at the southern end of the Pinlu Canal, automation has been implemented, which has significantly increased operational efficiency. Containers are moved using mechanical manipulators and unmanned transport vehicles, allowing the implementation of the principle “get off the train — directly onto the ship, get off the ship — directly onto the train.”

For Singapore and Southeast Asian countries, the significance of the Pinlu Channel lies in the fact that goods from the southwestern regions of China will be able to enter Southeast Asian markets more directly and cheaply.
