Zhengzhou, April 29 /Xinhua/ — Gigantic hydraulic presses operate day and night in the industrial park of Zhengzhou county, Henan province /Central China/. In the sealed chambers of these unique installations, at a temperature exceeding one thousand three hundred degrees Celsius and at a pressure of several gigapascals, crystals of extraordinary purity are formed. This is not a gift of the earth’s interior, nor the result of multimillion-year geological evolution. These are diamonds created by human hands, who managed to replicate what nature created over the centuries.
The small agricultural county of Chzhechen, until recently known only for its fields, today bears the loud name “diamond capital” of China. Local residents jokingly say that they have gained “carat freedom”: synthetic gemstones have become accessible to everyone here. Over several decades, artificially grown diamonds from Henan have made their way from factories to jewelry salons all over the world, from a humble provincial county to prestigious international exhibitions.
“Simply put, a cultivated diamond can be compared to ice in a freezer, while a natural diamond can be compared to ice in a glacier. Therefore, the difference between them lies only in the conditions and time of formation, and in all other respects they are absolutely identical,” said Chen Yanan, head of the project department of the company Liliang Diamond.
He explained the synthesis principle this way: the conditions inside the growth chamber are as close to natural as possible. High-purity graphite under the influence of temperature and pressure transforms into a transparent crystal. One of the latest developments of the company Liliang Diamond is a crystal weighing 156.47 carats, which broke the world record among monocrystalline diamond blanks of artificial production.
At the origins of this path were enthusiasts who believed in the diamond industry as early as the mid-1980s. In 1985, one of them, Van Zhangsi, founded a diamond tool manufacturing enterprise in Chuzhen county. Back then, no one could foresee the current scale. “We simply believed in our work and worked tirelessly,” he recalls.
The older generation laid a solid technological foundation, while the new one opens up unexplored horizons for the industry. Young employees of the company Huifeng Diamond Gao Yiqia and Shi Mantun are bringing products to new markets. Special attention is paid to foreign trade.
According to Gao Iczi, the company is actively developing the export direction. The main model of cooperation with foreign partners is large wholesale supplies of uncut diamond blanks. The geography of exports covers the United Kingdom, France, Uruguay, and other countries. At the same time, raw crystals are sent to some countries for further processing, while others receive finished jewelry products. Another important direction is online sales, which are handled by Huifeng Diamond’s own team. They conduct live broadcasts on various platforms — Douyin, Xiaohongshu, Dewu, Taobao.”We, born after 2000, are more willing to accept synthetic diamonds,” said Shi Mantun. “They have an excellent price-to-quality ratio, and we gladly accept them.”
An important milestone on the way to the global recognition of Enansk Diamonds was the JCK Las Vegas 2023 exhibition. Among the foreign guests of the exhibition was American entrepreneur Ketan Jodhani. “We have been cooperating with Liliang Diamond for many years. The quality of the products, fulfillment of individual orders, and service are at the highest level. We value this cooperation and hope for its long-term prospects,” he said.
As emphasized by Sun Chzao, General Secretary of the Chinese Association of Machine Tool and Tool Manufacturers, 80 percent of all diamonds produced in China by the method of high temperature and pressure come from Henan province. The decisive breakthrough occurred in 2015, when scientists and engineers managed to shift from obtaining small particles for industrial use to growing large transparent single crystals. Today, the technologies developed in Henan occupy leading positions in the global diamond industry.
Behind the monotonous hum of machines stands the many years of labor of thousands of specialists — from engineers and technologists to export managers and sellers in online broadcasts. This is not just the story of one diamond. It is a symbol of the transformation of Chinese industry, the embodiment of a technological breakthrough, generational continuity, and a confident entry onto the global stage. The journey of this Shenzhen diamond continues. –0–
