Ningbo, April 29 /Xin Hua/ — Sustainable development is a global task that affects practically all aspects of human and social life. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) continues to work to unite all efforts for building a safe and stable common future. This was stated by participants of the SCO Forum on Green and Sustainable Development, which opened on Wednesday.

“The topic of today’s forum ‘Implementation of Initiatives on Global Governance and Joint Promotion of Green and Sustainable Development’ reflects the key challenges and priorities of the modern world,” noted the special representative of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic on special assignments Bakyt Torobaev, calling cooperation on green and sustainable development one of the important directions among the SCO member states.

This year, marking the 25th anniversary since the founding of the SCO, Kyrgyzstan is presiding over the organization. “We are carrying out this important phase under the motto ‘25 years of the SCO: Together towards a sustainable world, development, and prosperity,’” said B. Torobaev.

According to him, under the conditions of climate change, increasing pressure on natural resources and the need to ensure energy security, transition to a green economy becomes a strategic task for all states.

“Within the framework of our chairmanship, we pay special attention to issues of sustainable development, environmental safety, and the expansion of economic cooperation,” he said.

The Deputy Secretary-General of the SCO, Sulayl Khan, noted that the SCO is actively developing interaction in such key areas as environmental protection, green development, combating climate change, conservation of biodiversity, rational use of natural resources, poverty reduction, improvement of healthcare, and enhancement of people’s quality of life. These directions fully correspond to the UN Agenda on sustainable development for the period up to 2030 and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which cover practically all aspects of human life: from ecology and economic growth to social justice and international partnership.

Emphasizing that sustainable development is becoming an integral part of the global agenda, a strategic task for every state and a necessary condition for the stability of the entire world community, it added that there is a mature objective necessity to more effectively engage the combined potential of the SCO, the experience and knowledge of member states that have achieved significant progress in achieving the target indicators of sustainable development.

Within the framework of the forum, the Ningbo Initiative for Cooperation among SCO countries on sustainable development was published. It is noted that, being an important multilateral mechanism involving the Eurasian continent, the SCO is intended to play a constructive role in global ecological protection and to contribute to the formation of a just, balanced, and mutually beneficial cooperation system of global ecological management. There is a call for the unification of global efforts in the field of ecological cooperation and the promotion of low-carbon transformation within the framework of a joint movement towards green development, as well as to the search for new ways of global governance and the formation of a human life community andof nature.

“We confirm our intention to strengthen the ‘green’ partnership and take further measures for joint assistance in transitioning to an environmentally clean and low-carbon economy for the sake of a sustainable future in the region,” the document adds.

“The directions voiced in this initiative are relevant because measures taken at the national level alone are insufficient to solve environmental problems. Exchange of experience between countries is necessary. SCO precisely serves as a good platform for adopting comprehensive solutions and coordinated actions to address all these problems,” commented correspondently Sin Yua Shattyk Tastemirova, Deputy Director of the Department of Climate Policy of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan.

In order to promote the implementation of green and sustainable development of the SCO, the responsible secretary of the China-SCO Geological Cooperation Research Center, Yan Bo, proposed strengthening multilateral or bilateral scientific research cooperation to provide technological support in decision-making by governments of various countries, advancing green industry sectors of China abroad for cooperation with relevant countries with the aim of raising the level of green and sustainable development through the development of these industrial sectors, as well as facilitating exchange andinteraction between national systems of personnel training in the field of green and sustainable development of the respective countries.

The SCO Forum on Green and Sustainable Development is being held in the city of Ningbo, Zhejiang Province / Eastern China /. Its organizers jointly include the Chinese SCO Committee on Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the PRC, and the People’s Government of Zhejiang Province. -0-
