On April 25 and 26, the Moscow qualifying stage of the XIV All-Russian contest “Bridge to the Chinese Language” took place. One of the most prestigious competitions united 288 schoolchildren from Moscow who demonstrated their knowledge of the Chinese language, culture, and traditions of the Celestial Empire.
Poetry and vocal performances
In recent days, the main building of RUDN sounded in Chinese: participants demonstrated not only impeccable pronunciation but also artistry — from the recitation of classical poetry to vocal performances. Among the honored guests were representatives of the leadership of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Russian Federation.
The “Bridge of the Chinese Language” contest is a ticket to Beijing: the strongest participants of this stage will form a national team that will represent Russia in the world finals.
The Russian University of Peoples’ Friendship traditionally serves as one of the key platforms for the study of Oriental languages in Russia. Today, the university implements more than 90 agreements with universities of the PRC, including 18 double degree programs, and students undergo internships in the largest educational centers of China — Shanghai, Beijing, Wuhan, and Xi’an. One of the largest Chinese communities in the country forms a rich linguistic environment at RUDN and opens up opportunities for intercultural communication.
International and educational organizations actively developing cooperation in the field of studying the Chinese language and culture acted as partners and organizers of the Moscow stage of the competition. Among them is the China Intercontinental Communication Center (CICC), the educational and methodological center for the Chinese language of the autonomous non-profit organization “CHILANS”.
The responsible organizer was the Department of Education Affairs of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Russian Federation. Organizational support was also provided by the online Chinese language school “Media+” and the Center for Testing and Studying the Chinese Language “Huamin”.
Step to the future profession
Contest participants note that the “Bridge of the Chinese language” is not only a competition, but also an important step towards a future profession.
“I am participating for the second time. For me, this is an opportunity to declare myself and assess how far I have advanced in learning languages. Chinese is my contribution to the future: I dream of becoming a designer and, perhaps, implementing my projects specifically in the Celestial Empire,” —Sofya Lukyanenko, a student of class 4 “E” of the Kurchatov school.
The importance of the competition for the professional self-determination of schoolchildren was emphasized by the Vice-Rector for Admissions at RUDN.Natalya Ivanovna Chesnokova.
“The competition ‘Bridge of the Chinese Language’ is not just a knowledge test, it is a real social elevator for talented schoolchildren. Winners get a unique opportunity to represent Russia at the world final in Beijing, and we are proud that this path begins within the walls of RUDN. Our university creates all the conditions for studying Eastern languages and deep immersion in the culture of the Celestial Empire. I am confident that for many participants today’s event will become the first step not only towards winning the competition but also towards a successful professional career in an international environment,” —Natalya Chesnokova.
One more contest participant spoke about his motivationEvgeny Belonogov.
“I really want to get into the World Competition in China, so I try to show my best. At RUDN, you feel an incredible scale, and this inspires me: I realize that my dream — to teach music in China — is quite realistic if I persistently learn the language and pursue my goal,” —Yevgeny Belonogov.
The holding of the Moscow stage of the RUNO competition emphasizes the role of the university as an international educational platform, where language becomes a tool for professional growth, and culture is the basis for dialogue and cooperation.
