In recent years, the city of Dunin (part of Mudanjiang city in Heilongjiang province) has focused on the strategy of “double purchases and double sales,” implementing the “ten main actions” for market expansion. This contributes to improving trade quality, industrial modernization, and creating a new driver of openness in the northern direction, accelerating the transformation from a transit economy to a real sector.

Dunedin Port is located on an important trade and economic route in Northeast Asia. It is the nearest and most convenient transit port in China to Vladivostok — the largest city of the Russian Far East. In its 36 years of existence, Dunedin Port has become an important channel of openness for Heilongjiang Province.

Relying on the political advantages of the port, the city of Dunning is actively developing the market for Russia’s Far East’s unique resources. Today, it has become an important “food basket” for Russia’s Far East and the largest base in China for exporting dried spices to Russia. Regarding the import of resources, the annual volume of antler imports accounts for more than half of its harvest in Russia. The scale of imports of precious stones, jade, and cedar nuts consistently holds leading positions in the province. Thanks to high activity, the Port of Dunning successfully overcame the “double threshold” of 10 billion yuan and 1 million tons in terms of import-export cargo volume and trade turnover, officially entering the list of ports with cargo turnover.

The city of Dunning actively stimulates trading entities and develops cross-border industrial clusters. Currently, about 1,000 trading enterprises from all over China are concentrated here, of which about 200 are local companies registered in Dunning.

In the city of Dunnin, projects were launched for processing cedar nuts, precious stones and jade, soy, confectionery products, aquatic products, and others. At the same time, abroad, projects were created for the production of extruded soy flour and soy products, forming a complete cross-border production chain. The inclusion of the “cross-border processing chain” model of Russian grain in the provincial list of innovative practices in the free trade zone marked a transition from simple commodity trade to an industrial economy.

The city of Dunin is also actively modernizing the port channels. The design throughput capacity of the port has been increased to 1.7 million tons per year. The number of registered trucks at the checkpoint has increased from 170 trucks per day at the beginning of 2025 to 243 on peak days, which has ensured an efficient logistics infrastructure for cross-border trade and industrial development.
