Moscow, April 25 /Xin Hua/ — The tour of the Chinese acrobatic drama “Swan,” produced by the Guangzhou Acrobatic Arts Theatre from China, is being held on the Historical Stage of the Bolshoi Theatre from April 24 to 26. The innovative fusion of drama, acrobatics, and ballet has elicited a lively response from Russian viewers.
The premiere of this show concluded on Friday evening with full success. The first act kept the audience in constant tension: a kaleidoscope of acts with diabolo, straw hats, and the most complex lifts. When in the second act the gymnast stood on pointe on her partner’s shoulder — the audience literally exploded with applause, enjoying the mastery of the “ballet on the shoulder”.
The artistic director and producer of the U Chengdan project told correspondent Sin Yua that in 2024, as part of the Cross-Year of Culture of China and Russia, “Swan” has already been shown on the stage of the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg. The current visit to Russia will delight the audience with an updated version of the repertoire — costumes and stage design have been improved.
“Acrobatic art has a unique charm. We hope that the Russian viewer will be able to get a deeper acquaintance with the theatrical art of China, as well as with the aesthetic ideals and artistic aspirations of Chinese artists,” she emphasized.
22-year-old spectator Polina Misailova, who has been practicing gymnastics since childhood, stood up from her seat during the ovation, applauding standing. “My soul is captivated. I really liked it, especially the last movement when the ballerina stands en pointe on the shoulder, it’s very beautiful. I can’t imagine how they do it. Here is a combination of ballet with artistic gymnastics and acrobatics,” shared P. Misailova with her impressions.
Bolshoi Theater ballerina Anastasia Zvonkova experienced a whole range of feelings during the performance, calling the performance “incredible.” “So much emotion, delight, fear, surprise, true happiness and searching. How limitless the capabilities of the human body are. How beautifully and incredibly all these feelings that the artist experiences, preparing for the performance and for this victory, which he achieves every time he steps onto the stage, can be conveyed in movement. These are incredible emotions,” the artist said.
After the completion of the Moscow tour, the acrobatic drama “Swan” will once again go to Saint Petersburg, where from April 29 to May 1 it will be performed on the stage of the Mariinsky Theatre. A total of eight performances are planned during the current tour across Russia.
