Moscow, April 25 /Xin Hua/ — The information about Russia allegedly intending to develop anti-satellite nuclear weapons is a lie spread by the USA to justify its own aggressive policy of militarizing space. This was stated on Friday by the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, at a briefing.
“Absurd fabrications by Washington have nothing to do with reality and are part of a propaganda campaign to discredit the space activities of the Russian Federation and its initiatives to prevent an arms race in outer space,” the Russian diplomat stated.
M. Zaharova emphasized that Russia scrupulously complies with its international obligations in the field of space exploration and consistently advocates for the development of a legally binding document that would prohibit the placement of weapons in outer space, as well as the use of force or the threat of force against space objects.
At the same time, she noted, the US policy in space is becoming increasingly aggressive and provocative. In her opinion, under the fabricated pretext of the “Russian threat,” Washington is activating steps to increase its military potential in orbit.
“By carrying out these adventures, the West ignores the fact that any armed conflict in orbit will have catastrophic consequences for the long-term sustainability of space activities and the prospects of space exploration for all countries without exception,” M. Zagarov summarized.
