Moscow, April 25 /Xin Hua/ — Information about the alleged intentions of Russia to develop anti-satellite nuclear weapons is a lie spread by the USA to justify its own aggressive policy of militarizing space. This was stated on Friday by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, at a briefing.
“Absurd fabrications by Washington have nothing to do with reality and are part of a propaganda campaign to discredit the space activities of the Russian Federation and its initiatives to prevent an arms race in outer space,” the Russian diplomat stated.
M. Zagarova emphasized that Russia strictly adheres to international obligations in the field of space exploration and consistently advocates for the development of a legally binding document that would prohibit the placement of weapons in outer space, as well as the use of force or threat of force against space objects.
At the same time, the US policy in space, she noted, is becoming increasingly aggressive and provocative. In her opinion, under the fabricated pretext of a “Russian threat,” Washington is activating steps to increase its military potential in orbit.
“By carrying out these adventures, the West ignores the fact that any armed conflict in orbit will have catastrophic consequences for the long-term sustainability of space activities and the prospects for space exploration for all states without exception,” summarized M. Zagarov.
