Nicosia, April 25 /Xin Hua/ — German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated on Friday that Ukraine cannot immediately join the European Union (EU), while proposing a process of rapprochement between the country and EU institutions.
“It is clear to everyone that the immediate accession of Ukraine to the EU is impossible,” noted F. Merz at a press conference following the informal summit of EU leaders in Nicosia, Cyprus.
He proposed to allow Ukraine to participate in the meetings of the European Council, the European Parliament, and the European Commission without the right to vote.
F. Mertz also proposed the gradual integration of Ukraine into certain areas of policy depending on the pace of domestic reforms in the country.
He stated that he discussed these measures with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, noting that the plan received strong support from his colleagues in the European Council.
