Moscow, April 24 /Xinhua/ — Japan is consciously renouncing the pacifist paradigm of its foreign policy, which has been legislatively enshrined for more than 80 years. This was stated on Friday in a news briefing in Seoul by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, in response to a question from correspondent Xinhua.
“We are closely monitoring Tokyo’s steps in the area of liberalizing the export of weapons and military products and see in this a deliberate departure by Japan from the pacifist paradigm of foreign policy of this country, which has been legislatively entrenched for more than eight decades,” the diplomat said, commenting on the recent decision of the Japanese government to officially review the “three principles on the transfer of defense equipment and technology,” which opens up opportunities for the export of weapons, including lethal ones.
M. Zaharova noted that Russia again calls on the Government of Japan to abandon the course of accelerated remilitarization and to recognize the results of the Second World War. She also described the recent visit by the interparty group of 126 Japanese legislators to the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo, which is considered a symbol of Japanese militarism and military aggression, as a cynical act.
“This again embodies the dangerous policy of official Tokyo, the essence of which has become absolute neglect, oblivion of the lessons of history, and whitewashing the most brutal, monstrous crimes of the past. We once again call on the Japanese government to fully acknowledge the results of the Second World War, to abandon the course towards acceleration or accelerated remilitarization. It has already brought grief and suffering to the peoples of Asia,” the diplomat pointed out.
Speaking about the participation of Japan’s Self-Defense Forces in the large-scale American-Philippine naval exercise “Balikatan-2026”, an official representative of the Russian foreign policy department noted that Moscow constantly conveys to Tokyo its concern about the expansion of military activity within the Japan-US alliance and its comprehensive assistance to Washington in forming narrow-block quasi-alliances in the Asia-Pacific region.
“Such steps only increase the degree of tension in this part of the world. Well, of course, they do not contribute to ensuring stability and harmonious joint development,” concluded M. Zagarov.
