Nicosia, April 24 /Xinhua/ — Leaders of the European Union /EU/ on Friday called for diplomatic efforts aimed at long-term resolution of the conflict in the Middle East, and demanded to ensure full and permanent freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
As stated by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen following the informal meeting of EU leaders and negotiations with partners from the Middle East in Cyprus, the current common goal is to agree on a long-term end to the war. “This includes restoring full and permanent freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz without charging duties,” she noted.
The President of the European Council, António Costa, also supported the call for diplomatic efforts to seek a long-term solution.
According to A. Koshta, the war in the Middle East has already led to catastrophic consequences for the population, infrastructure, and the global economy. “And with each day without a resolution, the situation only worsens,” he pointed out.
A European official stated that the Strait of Hormuz must be “immediately reopened again without any restrictions and fees,” adding that freedom of navigation in this area “has vital importance for the whole world.”
In addition, EU leaders warned about the economic consequences of the crisis in the Middle East, primarily regarding its impact on energy prices.
U.S. Vice President Harris drew attention to the fact that since the beginning of the conflict, EU gas import costs have increased by more than 25 billion euros / 29.28 billion US dollars / without an increase in volumes of energy resource supplies.
The Chair of the European Commission announced that by summer the EU will present an electrification action plan aimed at accelerating the deployment of local sources of environmentally clean energy.
