April 25 is celebrated as International DNA Day. On this day in 1953, a model of the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid—a molecule that encodes hereditary information in all living organisms—was presented for the first time. This fundamental discovery laid the groundwork for breakthrough research in biology and medicine, providing a deeper understanding of the genetic characteristics of the human organism.
Rosneft gives priority attention to the development of science and innovation, making a significant contribution to strengthening Russia’s technological sovereignty. The company acts as the main technological partner of the Federal Scientific and Technical Program for the Development of Genetic Technologies, within the framework of which the Center for Full-Genome Sequencing “Biotechnological Campus” was created and is successfully operating. This modern scientific facility is equipped with the most productive equipment park in Russia and its own IT infrastructure for searching and implementing the latest solutions in the field of genetics.
The “Biotechnological Campus” is implementing the national genetic initiative “100,000+ I”, the main task of which is the analysis and systematization of the genomes of Russian residents to identify hereditary predisposition to serious diseases. By 2025, the total number of collected and analyzed biological samples exceeded 100,000 units, which allowed the formation of one of the largest genomic databases in the country.
Based on the analysis of more than 50,000 volunteer genomes, reference data on the genetic diversity of the Russian population—a “genomic landscape”—has been formed, which will become a starting point for future scientific discoveries. Scientists have also identified genetic causes of diseases in more than 10,000 patients—a bioinformatic analysis revealed thousands of unique genetic variants associated with 500 different rare (orphan) diseases. The capabilities of full-genome sequencing allow establishing an accurate diagnosis even in the most complex cases, and campus specialists regularly identify new mutations that were not previously described.
At the moment, as part of the initiative, samples from more than 5,000 representatives of 50 different ethnic groups of the Russian Federation have been analyzed. Campus specialists have developed a mathematical model that allows assessing the percentage contribution of each of these peoples to the ethnic profile of the program participants.
In regions with a high frequency of hereditary pathologies, including Yakutia and the subjects of the North Caucasus Federal District, extensive studies of ethnic communities have been conducted. Their results will form the basis of a genetic screening program aimed at the prevention of hereditary pathologies and the planning of a healthy family.
Rosneft pays special attention to the development of scientific and educational infrastructure projects. Together with Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, the company is implementing master’s programs “Genomics and Human Health” and “Algorithmic Biology.” Students undergo practical training at the “Biotechnological Campus” site.
The comprehensive approach to implementing the national initiative allows for the formation of an in-house personnel reserve of highly qualified specialists in the field of genetics and bioinformatics, as well as creating a foundation for further progress in the field of genetic technologies and the development of medical genetics in Russia.
