Beijing, April 22 /Xinhua/ — Reunification is the only future for Taiwan and the key to the well-being of Taiwanese compatriots. This was stated on Wednesday by the official spokesperson of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council of the PRC, Zhang Han.
She made a corresponding statement at a regular briefing for journalists, commenting on the recently conducted public opinion poll on the island, the results of which showed that the majority of respondents advocate strengthening cross-border exchanges for the purposes of maintaining peace and stability.
The survey results were published after the trip of the Kuomintang party delegation, led by its chairman Chen Liren, to the continental part of China.
According to the official representative of the State Council Office, the survey shows that this trip corresponded to the will of the majority of the island’s residents, who aspire for peace, development, exchange, and cooperation.
Zhang Han also responded to another journalist’s question regarding the statements of the leader of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in Taiwan, Lai Ching-te, who said that peace cannot be achieved through compromises or concessions on the issue of “sovereignty.”
“Taiwan is part of China, it has never been a separate state and cannot become one,” said Zhang Han, emphasizing that the so-called “sovereignty” of Taiwan does not exist.
Preserving peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait continues to be the common aspiration of compatriots on both shores. The leadership of the DPP, going against the main direction of public opinion, stubbornly adheres to a separatist position on achieving “Taiwan independence,” constantly manipulating the slogan “achieving independence with force,” striving by all means to obstruct cross-strait exchanges and cooperation, and acts as the primary culprit undermining peace and escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait, an official representative indicated.
“Taiwan independence” is a dead-end path that will bring only serious troubles to the Taiwan Strait region, emphasized Zhang Han, calling on more Taiwanese compatriots to actively contribute to the peaceful development of cross-strait relations and the rightful cause of reunification of the Motherland.
