Paris, April 22 /Xin Hua/ — French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday that Israel must “give up its territorial ambitions” in Lebanon, calling for a political settlement to ensure regional stability.

Speaking at a press conference after meeting with the visiting Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, E. Macron called for a “political deal” between Israel and Lebanon to guarantee the security of both countries, protect Lebanon’s territorial integrity, and pave the way for normalization of relations.

He also warned that the EU may review its relations with Israel if its policy remains unchanged. According to him, the suspension of the Association Agreement between the EU and Israel, which has regulated trade relations since 2000, will become a “legal issue” under the current circumstances.

Regarding the issue of more serious regional tension, E. Macron called to extend the ceasefire between the United States and Iran, emphasizing that “resumption of war is unacceptable.”

On his part, N. Salam reiterated Lebanon’s demand for the “complete withdrawal” of Israeli troops from its territory along with the return of Lebanese prisoners and displaced persons. –0–
