Hanzhou, April 22 /Xinhua/ — On Wednesday, an exhibition of works by teachers and students of the Ilya Repin St. Petersburg Academy of Arts officially opened at the Chuzhou Art Museum in Hanzhou City /admin center of Chuzhou Province, East China/.
The event will take place within the framework of the Cross Years of Education of China and Russia in 2026-2027. Its organizers jointly are the Chinese Academy of Arts based in Hangzhou and the Ilya Repin St. Petersburg Academy of Arts.
The exhibition features more than 200 selected works by teachers and students of the Ilya Repin St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, created approximately over the past 20 years. Among the authors are such famous Russian artists as Vladimir Pesikov, Alexander Bystrov, and Yuri Kalyuta.
The main part of the exhibits consists of oil paintings. In addition, the collection also includes works of engravings and architectural graphics.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the exhibition, the rector of the Ilya Repin St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, Semyon Mikhailovsky, noted that excellent artists from China once studied at the academy back in the 1950s. Today, students come to the academy from more than 40 countries around the world, including China.
“And now we are here, and we are showing that we continue these traditions,” he said. “We are confident that we have a wonderful future of cooperation.”
According to the rector of the Chinese Academy of Arts Yu Xuyun, who studied at the Ilya Repin St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, Russian art masters have exerted a huge influence on China. Ilya Repin and his masterpiece “Barge Haulers on the Volga” are practically known to everyone in China.
“The holding of the current exhibition is not only a testimony of the deep friendship between the two leading academies of arts of China and Russia, but also a practice of dialogue between two great artistic traditions into a new era,” said Yu Xun, expressing hope for further cooperation with the Russian Academy of Arts in implementing a large number of joint projects aimed at stimulating the development of art education.
