Ottawa, April 21 /Xinhua/ — The Government of Canada announced on Monday a gradual increase in the number of direct flights between Canada and China, a measure aimed at diversifying trade and strengthening bilateral economic ties.

According to the press release from Transport Canada, in accordance with the new agreement, Canadian and Chinese airlines are now allowed to gradually increase the number of direct passenger and cargo flights, operate up to 20 cargo flights per week, and receive mutual access to all destinations in each country.

“The increase in passenger and cargo flights with China is a very positive step towards our goals of trade diversification, and will also strengthen strong ties between the peoples of both countries,” said Canada’s Minister of Transport Steven MacKinnon.

Minister of International Trade Mandinder S Sidhu stated that the expansion of direct air service with China strengthens the trade corridors on which Canadian exporters rely daily to deliver to global markets, which contributes to achieving Canada’s goal of increasing exports to China by 50 percent. At the same time, it contributes to the long-term growth of Canada’s domestic economy.
