Beijing, April 20 /Xin Hua/ — Electricity consumption in China – a barometer of economic activity in the country – amounted to more than 2.51 trillion kWh in the first quarter of 2026, increasing by 5.2 percent compared to the same period last year. This is evidenced by data published on Monday by the State Administration for Energy Affairs of the PRC.

Detailed data demonstrate stable growth in various sectors.

Electricity consumption in the primary sector of the economy increased by 7.1%, reaching 33.6 billion kWh.

About 1.6 trillion kWh, or 4.7% more than the previous year, went to the secondary sector. Within this sector, especially high growth rates were demonstrated by the manufacturing industry of high-tech products and equipment, where electricity consumption grew by 8.6% in annual terms.

During the reporting period, electricity consumption growth in the service sector amounted to 8.1% to 483.3 billion kWh. Notably, electricity consumption in the charging and battery replacement service sector jumped by 53.8% year-on-year to 37.6 billion kWh, while the internet data transmission service sector consumed 22.9 billion kWh during the specified period, which increased by 44% year-on-year.

In March, the country’s electricity consumption reached 859.5 billion kWh, increasing by 3.5% compared to March 2025.

In the first quarter, China’s economy grew by 5 percent, surpassing the forecasts of a number of foreign expert institutions and strengthening the country’s role as a stabilizing force in an increasingly unstable global economy. -0-
