As part of the annual “EcoArctic” forum with the support of “RN-Vankor” (a subsidiary of the oil and gas complex “Rosneft”) in the village of Nosok, Taymyr Dolgan-Nenets District, and Sovetskaya Rechka, Turukhansky District of Krasnoyarsk Krai, the national holiday – Reindeer Herder’s Day – was held.

The “EcoArctica” forum annually unites initiatives aimed at preserving unique Arctic ecosystems and supporting the traditional way of life of the indigenous peoples of Taimyr. The key event of the forum was Reindeer Herder’s Day – one of the main events of the year for the indigenous peoples of the North.

About 500 guests – reindeer herders of the neighboring camps participated in the holiday. On the improvised ethnoplaza, there was a national costume contest, decorative and applied arts crafts, and a tasting of northern cuisine dishes. The spectacular climax of the holiday was competitions in national wrestling, throwing a deer lasso (a lasso thrown onto a long pole used to chase reindeer), and jumping over sleds, as well as reindeer harness races. Participants demonstrated strength, agility, and skill indispensable for maintaining the traditional economy. The event concluded with a concert featuring the participation of ethnic creative groups.

Nosok settlement is one of the largest national settlements in Krasnoyarsk Krai, where a traditional nomadic way of life is maintained. More than one and a half thousand people live here, of whom almost 90% are representatives of indigenous small-numbered peoples – Nenets, who lead a nomadic lifestyle. Sovetskaya Rechka is the only settlement in the Tura district where representatives of indigenous peoples – Evenks and Selkups – continue reindeer herding.

Preservation of the traditional lifestyle of the indigenous population living in the area of the enterprise’s operations is an important direction of the social policy of the subsidiaries of Rosneft. Oil workers build housing for the local population, develop the infrastructure of northern settlements, help the families of reindeer herders, improve the material and technical base of educational institutions, social facilities, and healthcare institutions in the area of indigenous residence of KMNS.
