Deputy Chairman of the Government – Plenipotentiary Representative of the President in the Far Eastern Federal District Oleg Kozhemyako discussed with the Head of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) Aisen Nikolaev the main directions of the region’s socio-economic development, including ensuring northern supply deliveries, modernizing housing and communal services, developing social infrastructure, and improving transport accessibility, including the development of air communication and carrying out dredging work on northern rivers. The parties paid special attention to the implementation of large strategic projects, including the creation of the international transport corridor Mohe – Naiba.
The Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) is the largest entity in the Far East and among other Russian regions. For many years, you have been doing everything possible to ensure the dynamic development of the republic. In terms of birth rate growth, you rank first among the Far Eastern regions. Support for demographics has become one of your main areas of activity. This work has formed a stable development framework for the republic. You pay no less attention to economic aspects. Yakutia is a gas donor for the Far Eastern territories. The projects being implemented in Yakutia, including the development of the Elginskoye coal deposit, allow us to see further prospects for economic growth. Large-scale transport projects of Yakutia with access to other countries are being implemented. Special attention will be paid to the development of transport accessibility, which is of great importance for the region’s development. A system for preparing the northern supply has already been established. We understand how difficult it is to organize the delivery of goods along the Lena River and its tributaries. But there are no delays from the schedule here. The republic also has enormous tourist potential.Let’s discuss how we can assist in the implementation of further socio-economic programs. We will support the republic, taking into account the importance of the region, its economic and climatic features,
According to Aisen Nikolaev, Yakutia is developing quite confidently with the support of the Government of the country. “The gross regional product in 2026 is expected to be at the level of 2.8%, which is also above the national average. First of all, we see a steady development in coal mining. The Pacific Railway reached the planned coal transportation figures in September — 2 million tons were shipped. The gold mining industry is showing good results,” said the head of Yakutia.
The industrial production index for nine months (January – September) was 5.5%. This is much higher than last year and the national average. Among the regions of the Far Eastern Federal District, Yakutia ranks eighth.
Yakutia ranks first in coal mining in the Far East and second in Russia. Over the past few years, coal production in the republic has nearly tripled, and the region intends to systematically increase its volumes. Projects for the extraction of precious and rare-earth metals, polymetallic ores, and tungsten are also being implemented in Yakutia.
96% of the delivery of northern cargo has been completed. The head of the republic noted that this year there were problems on the Indigirka River. They were related to hydrology and the late start of dredging work, which led to the accumulation of vessels. “What was not delivered by rivers will be delivered by winter roads,” said Aisen Nikolaev. The settlements of the republic are provided with the necessary supplies of fuel and socially significant food products until the stable opening of winter roads.
The modernization of social infrastructure and the construction of facilities under national projects and state programs were also discussed. With funds from the presidential unified subsidy provided through the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East and Arctic, 28 social projects have already been implemented in Yakutia. Among them are the most high-tech cardiology center in the Far East and the only creative cluster “Labor Quarter” in the macro-region. More than 190 adjacent territories have been improved, and social facilities in the districts have been put into operation. In particular, in 2026, as part of the social development plan for the economic growth centers of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), major repairs were carried out and equipment was purchased for the hospital complex of the Neryungri Central District Hospital.
As of the end of the first nine months of 2026, the implementation of national projects in Yakutia reached 76.5% of the annual volume, which is higher than the same indicator last year (62%). The national projects cover a wide range of sectors – from construction of social facilities and healthcare modernization to the development of the road network and resettlement of citizens from dilapidated housing.
The tourism sector also demonstrates a steady positive trend. By the end of 2026, the region is expected to see an increase in tourist flow by 16%. It is anticipated that the number of tourists from other regions of the Russian Federation and foreign countries will reach 300,000 people. The development of the republic’s tourism sector is carried out, among other things, within the framework of the national project “Tourism and Hospitality.” The industry’s growth is supported by infrastructure improvement, the emergence of new tourist products, increased transport accessibility, and the organization of major events.
One of the most popular tourist attractions remains the Lena Pillars, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. In the last five years, the tourist flow to this destination has approximately tripled.
