In recent years, the village of Siyancitun in Xunxian County, Hebi City, Henan Province /Central China/ has developed a model of “nigugu + learning + cultural and creative products + e-commerce development,” aimed at involving local residents in entrepreneurial activities and increasing their incomes. This model is based on the traditional craft of making nigugu clay figurines, which has been included in the list of intangible cultural heritage. The village has established a unified chain that combines the preservation of cultural traditions, product manufacturing, educational programs, product promotion through e-commerce, and rural tourism. Thanks to the development of the traditional pottery craft, local residents have new opportunities to improve their well-being.
“Nigugu” is the popular name for traditional painted clay figurines from Xunxian County. They got their name because of a small hole in the back: if you blow into it, the figurine produces the characteristic “gu-gu” sound. In 2006, the traditional craft “Clay Sculpture — Nigugu of Xunxian County” was included in the first list of intangible cultural heritage at the national level.
