In Novosibirsk Akademgorodok, as part of the XXII Autumn Conference of Young Scientists “Topical Issues of Economics and Sociology,” a scientific slam — “Idea Laboratory” — was held for the first time. The conference is organized by the Institute of Economics and Industrial Production Organization (IEOPP) of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences together with the Faculty of Economics (FE) of Novosibirsk State University. The first meeting of young scientists within this conference took place in 1968.
The slam took place at the “Kul’turno” bar on Morsky Prospekt. The format implied that speakers would present their research in 10 minutes without complex terms, using visualization. The winner was determined by the audience through voting. The host of the event was Alexander Georgievich Anishchenko.
The slam program included performances by researchers from HSE, NSU, and IEOPP SB RAS:
- Ivan Khlyubko (HSE University) presented the topic “The City as a Play Space.” The report was dedicated to mechanisms for involving youth in urban gamification in Saint Petersburg.
- Yuri Slastya (HSE) presented on the topic of religiosity and the gap between the desired and actual number of children. The report compared the attitudes of Orthodox and unaffiliated Russians.
- Alena Brutyan (NSU) presented the topic of illiquid housing of Russian households. Based on survey data, the processes of acquiring real estate and the problems related to its location and condition were described.
- Dinara Fakhretdinova (IEOPP SB RAS) spoke about the priorities for the development of the transport sector in Russia and China, as well as about geopolitical and infrastructural trends in this field.
- Kseniya Kalashnikova (a research fellow at IEOPP SB RAS, senior lecturer at the Economics Faculty of NSU) gave a non-competitive presentation titled “Oysters from Paris and Bears from Moscow: How Siberian and Far Eastern Cities Construct the ‘Present’.” The report concerned the symbolic economy and mechanisms of creating local authenticity in the restaurant business. The presentation was structured according to the principle of a “scientific menu”: it presented the results of analysis of over 6,700 establishments, five factors shaping local cuisine, as well as the barriers and risks faced by the industry.
According to the viewers’ voting results, first place was taken by Dinara Fakhretdinova, second place — Yuri Slastya, the third place was shared by Alena Brutyan and Ivan Khlyubko. Participants were given diplomas, candies from various Siberian cities, and a subscription to the magazine “ECO”.
Dinara Fakhretdinova, a 2025 graduate of the Faculty of Economics at NSU, a junior researcher at IEOOPP SB RAS, shared her impressions:
— This is my first experience participating in such a format. There was some nervousness. For me, this is a new format—speaking on stage with a microphone in front of an audience. My report was dedicated to the priorities of the development of the transport industry in Russia and China. After the speech, the audience asked questions and came forward with comments.
Ksenia Kalashnikova, a research fellow at the Department of Social Problems of IEOPP SB RAS and senior lecturer at the EF NSU, said:
— Organizing the slam was a new experience. The event took place at the “Kulturno” bar. The audience asked questions. The students gave presentations on various topics.
According to a representative of the organizing committee Olga Tarasova, the scientific slam format was used to change the communication format, and a non-academic venue was chosen to emphasize the informality of the event.
