During a working visit to Saint Petersburg, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko visited the Saint Petersburg State Marine Technical University (SPbSMTU). The Vice Premier evaluated the facilities where students and schoolchildren work on real production tasks and discussed with the university leadership the development of engineering education, cooperation with enterprises, and the university’s technological priorities.
SPbSMTU is among the 38 engineering universities implementing the development strategy in technological leadership directions, as commissioned by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. The university employs 12 chief designers. Each of them has a design bureau with laboratories and production facilities.
“Saint Petersburg State Marine Technical University is one of Russia’s leading technical universities. It actively participates in the measures of the national project ‘Youth and Children’: it is part of the ‘Priority-2030’ project, developing an advanced engineering school. All this helps the university create in-demand developments, strengthen cooperation with industrial partners, and make a significant contribution to our country’s technological leadership – a national goal set by our President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, who has also personally visited SPbGMTU,” stated Vice Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko.
Rector of SPbGMTU Gleb Turichin spoke about the fact that this year the university entered a pilot project to improve the higher education system, which increased interest in the university from applicants, and that the average Unified State Exam score immediately rose by five points.
The Deputy Prime Minister assessed the work of engineering classes. At the initiative of Korabelka, such classes have appeared in schools of most regions of the country. Here, high school students become familiar with marine robotics, laser optics, and other engineering fields. About 30% of graduates of engineering classes enter SPbGMTU.
Dmitry Chernyshenko also inspected the laboratories of the advanced engineering school at SPbGMTU and the spaces created under the “Priority-2030” program. At the Institute of Information Technology, its director Alexey Lipis spoke about the integrated digital shipyard information system, which is already operational at the Onega Shipbuilding and Shiprepair Plant. At the Innovation in Education Laboratory, the deputy prime minister was shown medical equipment — the C1 “Levitation” centrifugal pump system. It is used in artificial circulation and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, and is in demand in oncology and organ donation. Also, during the visit, Dmitry Chernyshenko was introduced to the chief designers of the main institutes of the university.
An important part of the visit was the inspection of the research and production building of SPbGMTU, opened in February 2025. The university confidently remains among the leaders in the field of additive and laser technologies. Dmitry Chernyshenko was shown the assembly area for machines used in direct laser deposition, the assembly lines of powder feeders and technological heads. The Deputy Prime Minister was also demonstrated a range of direct laser deposition installations from the Institute of Laser and Welding Technologies, as well as a unit for laser powder cladding inside tubes.
“We are consistently moving towards making SPbGMTU not just a university, but a full-fledged scientific and production corporation. We have already established an end-to-end chain – from staff training and scientific developments to the implementation of technologies at real enterprises. Joint projects with industrial partners, our own production facilities, and advanced laboratories allow us to cover the full cycle – from idea to finished product. This approach gives students the opportunity to engage in real production tasks while still studying, and the industry receives qualified specialists who understand the specifics of the work,” said Gleb Turichin.
The Deputy Prime Minister was also shown samples of parts obtained by the direct laser deposition method within the framework of joint projects between the university and enterprises. Among the exhibits is the largest product in Russia created using additive technologies — a rocket carrier transition section with a diameter of 3 meters and a height of 50 cm.
At the end of the trip, Dmitry Chernyshenko evaluated the sports and socio-cultural facilities built at the university in recent years with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science and private philanthropists.
