Teachers and students of the Engineering and Construction Institute (ECI) of SPbPU have begun implementing a cooperation agreement with the State Autonomous Cultural Institution “Scientific and Production Center for the Protection and Use of Historical and Cultural Monuments” of the Pskov region.
The first stage of the project was a working expedition to Pskov. The Polytech team began studying the unique UNESCO World Heritage site “Temples of the Pskov Architectural School.” This ensemble includes ten churches and cathedrals dating from the 12th to early 17th centuries, as well as the adjacent monastic buildings on the banks of the Velikaya River.
Polytechnic students will conduct field studies of the monuments, create digital models of the temples, and develop safety passports. The outcome of the work will be the students’ ISI graduation qualification papers, which include systematized data, risk cartograms, and recommendations for updating the safety passports of architectural monuments.
The project is led by the institute director Marina Petrochenko, and coordinated by the senior lecturer of the Higher School of Industrial, Civil, and Road Construction (HSICRC) of ISI, Alexandra Komissarova. The development of digital models and the creation of the digital platform for managing UNESCO sites is overseen by the associate professor of HSICRC ISI, Anna Korotkova, while the laser scanning processes are handled by the HSICRC ISI assistant, Alexander Mitin.
During the trip, specialists conducted laser scanning of the buildings. This accurate data will serve as the foundation for the development of digital informational three-dimensional models of the temples, subsequent testing of safety passports, and the creation of a digital platform for managing UNESCO sites. The Engineering and Construction Institute already has successful experience in this area: earlier, politekhniki digitized the educational and historical reserve “A. G. Gagarin Estate ‘Kholomki’.”
A separate direction of the project became the popularization of the object. Representatives of the Higher School of Design and Architecture of ISI SPbPU will develop a corporate style for the “Temples of the Pskov Architectural School.” Representatives of the Higher School — assistant Polina Chernova and master’s student Lilia Skobeleva — thoroughly studied the city’s tourist infrastructure and existing souvenir products.
The project is being implemented in cooperation with the Pskov Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church, the Ministry of Cultural Heritage of the Pskov Region, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site Management Service of the Research and Production Center for the Protection and Use of Historical and Cultural Monuments. The goal of this collaboration is to create a unified digital platform for managing UNESCO sites, which will ensure their preservation and systematize the monitoring of architectural monuments’ condition.
